Non-conformist registers are similar in nature to parish registers; however, they originate from non-conformist churches. Non-conformist churches were those Protestant churches that did not conform to the established church, which after 1559 was the Church of England. Some examples of non-conformist churches would be Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Quaker.

Hardwick’s Marriage Act of 1753 required all marriages of the English and Welsh (except those belonging to the Quaker or Jewish denominations) to take pace in a parish chapel belonging to the Church of England. Burials and baptisms were exempt from this regulation. As a result, denominations outside the Church of England would record those events in their non-conformist registers. However, it is important to note that there were no laws requiring such documentation and some churches never kept records or did so sporadically.
