The Chapel of King Charles the Martyr first opened for worship in 1678, when Tunbridge Wells was just a small village containing a number of non-conformist chapels and meeting houses. When the Chapel was built it stood in three parishes, the altar in Tunbridge, the pulpit in Speldhurst and the vestry in Frant. It now stands wholly in Kent in its own parish, which was formed in 1889.

Tunbridge Wells became a popular spa retreat in the 17th century after the Chalybeate Spring was discovered in 1606 by Dudley Lord North, a nobleman of King James’ court. It received its ‘royal’ prefix because of its popularity among royalty
