Electoral Registers 1842-1900
Registers of parliamentary electors were established by the Representation of the People Act 1832, although it was not until 1885 that most adult males became eligible to vote.
The Victorian registers were compiled annually and published by parliamentary constituency, within which there were several polling districts, containing lists of voters alphabetically by name within each parish or township (except in large towns, where the arrangement was by street address).
These usually show the name of the voter, the addresses where they were registered and the nature of their qualification to vote, and sometimes their previous registered address. Eligibility to vote before 1832 is recorded in land tax returns.
Four million voters are included in these records.
