The Cheshire Collection
Workhouse Registers 1781-1910

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act established nine poor-law unions in Cheshire, each with its own workhouse.
The surviving registers of births and deaths, admissions and discharges, and of religious creeds for Altrincham (later renamed Bucklow), Chester, Congleton, Dukinfield (Ashton under Lyne), Great Boughton (Tarvin), Macclesfield, Nantwich, Northwich, and Runcorn are included up to 1910. Approximately 137,000 individual records are included in the Workhouse Registers.
