D-Day
We hope you enjoyed watching D-Day, the fourth episode of Find My Past the TV show.
Read on to see which records helped Robin Clarke, Kerry Wood and Frances O'Reilly to get to know their ancestors.
Birth records
Frances O'Reilly's great-uncle, Charles Jacob (known as John Jacob), was the medic attached to the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in June 1944. He was in Glider 93. We discovered his birth record on findmypast.co.uk:
While searching the births, we also discovered Kerry Wood's great-great-uncle, Frank Minns. Frank was a Lance-Corporal in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He was in Glider 91.
Census records
The census records on findmypast.co.uk reveal a sad story in Kerry Wood's family tree.
The birth record of Frank Minns, Kerry's great-great-uncle, shows that his mother's maiden name was Tebenham. By searching the marriage records for a Minns marrying a Tebenham, we discovered that Frank's mother's name was Ada Tebenham.
Next, we unearthed Ada in the 1881 and 1891 censuses on findmypast.co.uk:
In both censuses, Ada is recorded as living with her grandparents, James and Elizabeth/Betsy Tebenham, and their unmarried daughter, Isabella Tebenham. It seems that Ada was the illegitimate daughter of Isabella Tebenham.
Isabella never married and lived with her parents until their deaths in 1902 and 1907. The 1911 census then sadly records her in the Plomesgate Union Workhouse, Suffolk. She died five years later at the age of 64. View Isabella's 1911 census record and the address page below:
Armed forces death records
The episode revealed that Frank Minns died in action and Kerry took the opportunity to visit her great-great-uncle's grave. We found Frank's armed forces death record on findmypast.co.uk:
