Cemetery Records

These records include around 175,000 names for the period 1750-1968.

Ardwick Cemetery

Ardwick opened 1838 as a non-denominational cemetery and closed in 1950. It was located on Ford Street, Hyde Road, Ardwick in south Manchester and about 80,000 people were interred there. This included John Dalton (Scientist), Sir Thomas Potter (first Mayor of Manchester), and Sir Ernest Jones (Chartist). The burial registers also include signature of Karl Marx at the burial of Wilhelm Wolff on 13 May 1864.

These burial registers cover 1838-1950 and give:

  • Entry no.
  • Date of burial
  • Name of person
  • Address
  • Age

In many cases the 'disease' or cause of death is given.

Ardwick Cemetery Monumental Inscriptions 1845-1938

This is a record of 6,249 gravestones circa 1845-1938, in Ardwick Cemetery (ref M74/5/35/1).

Rusholme Road Cemetery, Chorlton Upon Medlock, Manchester

This cemetery opened 1821 and closed in 1933 and is sometimes known as the 'Dissenters Burial Ground' or 'Chorlton Row Cemetery'. It was located in Chorlton Upon Medlock in south Manchester and about 80,000 people were interred there. The cemetery was transferred to Manchester Corporation in 1954 for a recreation ground and the cemetery site became Gartside Gardens.

Rusholme Road Cemetery Inscriptions 1821-1933

This is a record of approximately 7,000 tombstones in Rusholme Road Cemetery circa 1821-1933 (ref M74/3/18/1).

Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Cemetery

The cemetery opened in 1834 and closed in 1968 and was located on Bury Old Road, Cheetham Hill, in north Manchester. It transferred to Manchester Corporation under the Manchester Corporation Act, 1967. In 2003 the remains of 20,000 bodies were then re-interred in a mass grave at Bury, Lancashire.

These burial registers cover 1815-1968 and give:
