topBurials of non-residents in north and east Cheshire
Coverage
Apart from the name of the officiating minister, these records contain full details from the parish registers.
They are
taken from the N Cheshire FHS database of Cheshire burial transcriptions compiled for the National Burial Index
(NBI).
Please note: This is an on-going project and is far from complete. North and east Cheshire
parishes are
about 80% complete, but the rest of Cheshire is very thinly represented.
The transcription consists of 30,082 entries covering the north and east of the county of Cheshire.
Roughly 10% of all entries are for people resident outside Cheshire, most of whom will have been brought back to
be buried
in family owned graves.
Some are from distant counties, though many are from towns and villages over the county boundary, but within 15
miles of
the parish. These places were usually so well known to the parish clerk that it was not thought necessary to
include the
county with the abode. The counties have been added, by individuals, from local knowledge, so should be regarded
as a guide
only. Where county is actually given in the register it should appear twice: both before and after the rest of
the
abode.

topBradford Parish Church Burials
Coverage
These records cover the parish church of Bradford.
This transcript by the Bradford Family History Society records 36,804 burials from the registers of the Parish
Church of
Bradford, Yorkshire. In this transcription of the burials from 1681 to 1837 only the details of the clergyman
performing the
ceremony have not been transcribed.
However, the burial registers held at the Parish Church, now the cathedral, do not exactly match the copies of
the
registers known as ‘Bishop’s transcripts’ and researchers are recommended to compare entries in
both these
forms of transcription, as differences do exist.

topBirmingham Cemetery Interment Registers
Key Hill Cemetery
Key Hill cemetery, in the Hockley district of Birmingham, was opened in 1836 and was one of the first non-conformist burial grounds in the city. The original interment register, containing over 60,000 records, has been filmed by BMSGH. The index has been compiled from this original source. Although there have been a few recent burials, the cemetery was not been actively used since World War II.
Warstone Lane Cemetery
Warstone Lane cemetery, alongside the Jewellery Quarter in the Hockley district of Birmingham, was opened in 1848. The original interment register, containing almost 94,000 records, has been filmed by BMSGH. The index has been compiled from this original source. Although there have been a few recent burials, use of the cemetery has declined significantly since the 1960s.

topMontgomeryshire Burials
Coverage
These transcriptions were made by members of the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society, using copy registers
kindly lent
to the society by the incumbents.
The policy is to transcribe to 1837 but to continue beyond that date to the end of the particular register. This accounts for the differing end-dates within the
transcriptions.
There are occasional gaps in these registers and some parts are very difficult to read. To fill these gaps and to
confirm
and clarify the entries, Bishop’s transcripts, which are located at the National Library of Wales, have been
used.
Entries which are wholly from the Bishop’s transcripts have been indicated by ‘BT’.

Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney, Australia is vast and it is essential that researchers have denomination, section, row and plot numbers on hand before visiting the cemetery. The Society of Australian Genealogists has a number of useful section maps available on its website which will help to determine the location of a gravesite.
History
Originally known as Haslem's Creek Cemetery and officially called the Necropolis, Rookwood Cemetery now stands in the centre of suburban Sydney on more than 777 acres. Over one million burials are believed to have taken place since it was opened in 1867, making it widely regarded as the largest cemetery in the southern hemisphere.
Rookwood quickly became the most important burial site in Sydney. Earlier cemeteries included the Old Burial Ground established in 1792 at Cathedral Close (now the site of Sydney Town Hall) which officially closed in 1820.
The Devonshire Street Cemetery (aka Sandhills or Old Sydney Burial Ground) had opened in 1819 but was overcrowded by the early 1840s.
Haslem's Creek, 11 miles from the centre of Sydney, was chosen as an ideal site for a new cemetery, easily accessible by both road and the Sydney-Parramatta railway line. It was designed as a grand garden cemetery of the Victorian era, along the lines of, among others, Kensal Green, in London. In its heyday it had a reputation as an ideal outing on weekends for families who would visit by train to enjoy its gardens, gazebos and serene atmosphere.
A mortuary station was built at Redfern and a Receiving House within the cemetery, both sandstone buildings being designed by the Colonial Architect James Barnet. Passengers were charged a modest fee but coffins travelled for free. With the advent of motor hearses the line into Rookwood closed in 1948 and the sandstone Rookwood Receiving House was sold and transported in 83 semi-trailers to Canberra, where it began a new life as the All Saints Church of England in Ainslie.
The first burial at Haslem's Creek Cemetery was reported to have taken place in 1867 when John Whalan, an 18 year old pauper Irishman, was buried there on 5 January. However, no official record survives of this interment.
Local residents of Haslem's Creek objected to the cemetery bearing that name, so it became known as Rookwood. In no time at all the surrounding area also became known as Rookwood, defeating the purpose of the name-change. Today, Rookwood remains an oasis within the greater Sydney metropolitan area, surrounded by housing, light industry and busy roads. It is run by the Rookwood Necropolis Trust (Joint Committee) with eight distinct administrative sections and has a Crematorium and café. The Friends of Rookwood Group, which grew out of the SAG's transcription team, runs regular historical tours and open days.
The records
The database contains more than 233,000 names. The Rookwood Transcription Project began in 1981 with the aim of recording details off every headstone in this vast cemetery which, when laid over a modern map, covers roughly the same area as the modern Sydney CBD from Circular Quay to Central Railway Station and from Darling Harbour to the Botanical Gardens. This was designated as the Society of Australian Genealogists' major project to commemorate the Australian Bicentenary in 1988.
Genealogical and historical details were extracted from each stone and entered into a data entry program. Print-outs were then taken back to the cemetery and checked against the headstones again so that final editing could take place. The project was co-ordinated by Laurel Burge, FSAG, OAM, who also undertook all of the initial data entry and editing work. At any one time a team of more than 100 SAG members and friends worked on the project.
The transcriptions were originally published on 11 series of microfiche and in 2002 were combined and released on CD-ROM (now out of print). This online database replicates the CD-ROM data. Researchers should note that no corrections, additions or amendments have been made to the data in its conversion to this online database. Transcriptions therefore cease in 1988 (with only minor amendments made when re-released on CD in 2002). While burials at Rookwood officially started in 1867 there are some earlier transcriptions of headstones which were moved from other cemeteries.
The Sleeping City, the story of Rookwood Necropolis, was published by the SAG in 1989 in conjunction with Hale & Iremonger (ISBN 0 86806 343 6). It is the story of the transcription project as well as a history of the cemetery and some of the people buried in it. It is out of print but will be found in many library and family history collections.
Well-known burials at Rookwood
Rookwood is the last resting place of many well-known Sydney identities and historical figures. These include:
Bea Miles (1902-1973) eccentric Sydney identity in the 1940s and 1950s, who had an extraordinary knowledge of Shakespeare and could quote it at length. It is said she once hired a taxi and asked the driver to take her to Perth (a distance of almost 4,000 kilometres). He did and she paid the fare.
Mei Quong Tart (1850-1903) a leading Sydney businessman and philanthropist who ran a chain of highly successful tea shops and restaurants in Sydney. He was renowned as an excellent employer, whose staff enjoyed paid sick leave and many other entitlements unheard of at the time. Quong Tart died after surviving a savage attack by an intruder in his office at the Queen Victoria Market and his death was widely lamented. His funeral at Rookwood was one of the biggest ever known in Sydney.
Jacob Pitman (1810-1890) brother of Sir Isaac Pitman who invented Pitman's Shorthand. His epitaph is inscribed in phonetic shorthand and begins 'in luving memori ov Jacob Pitman b.28 Nov 1810 at Trowbridge England, Seteld in Adelaide 1838, deid 12 March 1890'.
Peter Dodds McCormick (c.1833-1916) composed Advance Australia Fair, the Australian National Anthem.
Louisa Lawson (1848-1920) renowned suffragette and newspaper proprietor, was born near Mudgee in NSW on 17 February 1848. She married Norwegian-born Niels Hertzberg (Peter) Larsen a goldminer. Their first-born child was Henry Lawson, noted Australian short-story writer and balladist.
David Scott Mitchell (1836-1907) was the benefactor of the Mitchell Library in Sydney. He was an avid book collector who aimed to collect a copy of any item which related to the history of Australia. Following his death his entire book collection together with a substantial legacy was left to the state. The Mitchell Library today contains the majority of Australia's most important historical documents and is one of the finest library collections in the world.
