1911 census
Payments and costs
How much does a subscription cost?
Please see our subscriptions comparison table for a list of prices and to find out which subscription is best for you.
Is it cheaper for me to buy a subscription or use PayAsYouGo credits to view the 1911 census?
This depends on how many records you view. Our 12-month subscription costs the equivalent of viewing just 15 records (images and transcriptions) with PayAsYouGo credits. And our six-month subscription costs the equivalent of viewing only 10 records.
If you view fewer than 10 records, it will be cheaper to use PayAsYouGo credits. But if you think you are likely to view more than 10 records, your best payment option is probably a subscription.
Is it worth buying an Explorer subscription and a 1911 census subscription together?
A combined Explorer and 1911 census subscription gives you access to everything you’ll need to research your English and Welsh family history.
You get access to records from each of the 1841-1901 censuses; a complete set of birth, marriage and death indexes (1837-2006); parish records dating from 1538; migration records; overseas births, marriages and deaths; military records, and much more.
If the two subscriptions are bought together, we are offering a 20% introductory discount (for a limited time only). Find out more.
I already have an Explorer or Discovery subscription. How do I subscribe to the 1911 census?
You can buy a combined Explorer and 1911 census subscription through the payment page, which will include a 20% introductory discount - for a limited time only. (You'll of course still get your usual 20% loyalty discount each time you renew).
The price you pay will be further discounted to reimburse you for any time left on your old subscription, so you won’t lose out. This is calculated at a pro-rata daily rate. Upgrade your subscription.
What will happen to my unused PayAsYouGo credits if I take out a subscription?
The expiry date of any remaining credits will be extended to three months beyond the expiry date of any subscription you buy, so that you do not lose them. You can also use them to access the records not included within the Explorer subscription, such as Living Relatives searches.
How many PayAsYouGo credits does it cost to view 1911 census records?
If you don’t have a 1911 census subscription, it costs 10 credits to view a transcription and 30 credits to view an image.
Will I be charged to re-view records if I use PayAsYouGo credits on the findmypast.co.uk 1911 census?
You will not be charged if you look at a record more than once within the same session. However, if you leave the site, sign out, or your connection is interrupted, you will be charged to view the record again. We recommend you print or save any images or transcripts you may wish to refer to later.

Can my 1911 census subscription be used on 1911census.co.uk as well as findmypast.co.uk?
No. Your subscription can only be used on findmypast.co.uk. The official 1911 census website, 1911census.co.uk, is a PayAsYouGo only site.
Can I use my findmypast.co.uk sign-in details and PayAsYouGo credits on 1911census.co.uk?
Yes. You can use your user name and password, plus your PayAsYouGo credits, across both sites.
Why are some of the search results on findmypast.co.uk different to those on 1911census.co.uk?
Findmypast.co.uk has the same data as 1911census.co.uk, but the fields are organised differently. We’ve decided, in the interests of consistency, to keep the search fields the same as with our other censuses. This means that the search results, particularly on broader searches, may differ between the two sites.
If you can’t find the result you want on one site, you could try searching the other at no extra charge. Remember – it’s free to search, but it costs to view records.
Will my searches and the records I view be saved?
No. Unfortunately, we do not have ‘saved searches’ or ‘saved records’ features yet.
We recommend you print or save any images or transcripts you may wish to refer to later.
General FAQs
What’s the difference between 1911census.co.uk and findmypast.co.uk?
1911census.co.uk is the official England and Wales 1911 census website, run by findmypast.co.uk in partnership with The National Archives. It offers PayAsYouGo access only.
Findmypast.co.uk is a privately-owned family history website. As part of our agreement with The National Archives, we are the only site to offer subscription-based access (as well as PayAsYouGo) to the 1911 census.
Why does the 1911 census cost more than other censuses?
The digitisation of the 1911 census cost significantly more in time and resources than any previous England and Wales census project, and it received no public funding.
There were over 10 times more images (around 16 million) than on the 1901 census. The census had to be scanned from the original documents, rather than created from film, which involved considerable handling and conservation of fragile documents, and significantly increased the costs of digitisation. The whole project took over two years and involved over 300 staff.
Prices are similar to other recent digitisation projects, such as the BT27 Passenger Lists and The National Archive’s Documents Online service.
Why haven’t you included the 1911 census in the Explorer subscription?
If we had included the 1911 Census within the Explorer subscription, we would have had to significantly increase the price of an Explorer subscription for all customers. We decided to give our customers the choice of continuing with Explorer at the same price (unchanged since 2007), or buying a separate subscription for the 1911 census.
