Grow your family tree

Your family tree questions, answered

1. Can I merge two family trees?

No. But you can only upload multiple trees.

2. Can I merge two duplicate people on my family tree?

From time to time, there may appear to be duplicates of the same person on your tree. In most cases, this happens when hints are merged on the tree incorrectly. To remove a duplicate person, go to the profile of the person you want to delete and select the 'Relations' tab. While hovering over someone in the relations tab you will see a 'broken link' icon which will allow you to remove them from that family or the entire tree.

3. How do I print my family tree?

You have the option to print the part of your tree that you are currently viewing by clicking the printer icon on the top right of the screen. The pedigree view will allow you to print up to 4 generations of the tree. If your family tree has more than four generations included, you can't print the entire tree from Findmypast. To print your entire tree, you'll need to export it to a GEDCOM file and use a specialist family tree printing service. You should be able to find plenty of them with a quick web search. If you want to print a small area of your tree, we recommend using your devices snipping tool, saving your selection and printing as normal.

4. How do I change the view of my family tree?

When viewing your family tree online at Findmypast, you have the option of seeing it in family, pedigree, family group, profile or people views. This can be helpful if you can't seem to find a specific ancestor on your tree. You may just need to change the view of the tree or stop focusing on one ancestor. A quick way of resolving this issue is by selecting 'Family View' or the 'People' list. The latter lists the first 20 people in your tree and allows you to search for and sort them.

5. Is there a limit to the number of people I can have on my family tree?

No. We want you to grow your tree outwards and backwards, as big as you want.

6. Can I view my family tree without an active subscription?

Yes. It is free to start and edit your family tree on Findmypast. However, you'll need a subscription to make the most of its best features, like record hints.

7. Can I share my family tree with others?

We are working on features to make Findmypast family trees more easily shareable. In the meantime, if your relatives have a Findmypast subscription, there is an option to send them a link and allow them to view your tree. If they don't have a subscription, you could send them an exported GEDCOM file or share your log in details if you are happy for them to have access to your account.

8. Can I delete part of a large tree?

You can only delete individual entries or the entire tree.

9. How do I change incorrect facts on my family tree?

Select the relevant profile on your tree and hit edit. This allows you to change the details saved on your tree.

10. How do I add key life events to my family tree?

You can add births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, burials and more to any member of your tree by visiting 'Facts & events' on their profile and selecting 'Add fact'. If you want these events to show on a timeline, go to tree settings and then fact types. In the 'Timeline' column just put a tick in the box against the event you want to show via a timeline on your relatives' family tree profiles.

11. How do I add sources, photos and notes to my family tree?

On the profile view, select 'Facts & events' and then the little blue 'Media, Sources, Notes' link where you can edit, add and delete these.

If you have uploaded your tree from another source, you may notice that photographs, articles, recordings and other media don't appear. Often, they are not supported when transferring from one platform to another and will need to be added to your Findmypast tree manually.

12. When I upload a new family tree, does it merge with the existing one?

No, you don't need to worry. You can store multiple family trees on Findmypast, just be sure to save them under different names.

13. How can I prevent hints and record merges overwriting information on my tree?

You'll need to add the details manually. On the person's profile in the tree, you can add multiple facts with dates and choose which one to show as the default.

14. Should I add female ancestors with their maiden name or married name?

We recommend adding them with their maiden name. Then, when you add a spouse, their marriage details will show in their profile.

If a person on your tree married more than once, it is quick and simple to add another spouse to their profile. Select the profile of the person you want to add another spouse to and choose their 'Relations' tab. From here, select the blue '+ Add relation' button. This will allow you to add a spouse to that person's profile either by choosing an existing person on your tree or by adding a brand new person.

15. How do I show an adoption on my family tree?

You may want to indicate an adoption by adding multiple sets of parents but this is not possible. You'll either need another tree with the separate set of parents or you can just add the details of the adoption as a fact on that person's profile. To do that, go to their profile, select the 'Facts & events' tab and click the blue '+Add fact' button. From here you can select 'Adoption' from the list and add the details.
