Antrim, deriving its name from the Irish Aontroim (“lone ridge”), has been a site of human settlement since prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age activity near Lough Neagh and along the Six Mile Water River. It later became an early Christian religious center, influenced by nearby monastic settlements like Bangor. During the medieval period, Antrim fell under the Gaelic lordship of the O'Neills of Clandeboye, and a castle was built near what is now Antrim Castle Gardens, establishing the area as a local seat of power.
In the 17th century, Antrim was reshaped by the Plantation of Ulster, with Scottish and English Protestants settling in the area and helping establish it as a thriving market town. The town played a notable role in the 1798 United Irishmen Rebellion, when local insurgents briefly seized control before being repelled. The 19th century brought further growth through industry, particularly linen production, and improved transport links via rail and Lough Neagh. Today, Antrim is a modern town that preserves its layered heritage through landmarks like the Round Tower, Clotworthy House, and the restored Antrim Castle Gardens.
