The index was created by Wienand Drenth, who published the 1714 list presented to Parliament in his 2012 A Regimental list of the Half-pay officers for the year 1714 on the English and Irish Establishments.

In 1714, after the Treaty of Utrecht and the end of the War of Spanish Succession, Parliament reduced the size of the British Army by almost 50 regiments. With the reductions in place, there were a high number of officers displaced. These officers were eligible for half-pay. Retirement for an officer was not available until 1871; instead, an officer could go on half-pay, which meant that he retained his commission and was available for future service but no longer active.

The names on the list of Half-pay officers represent 116 regiments.
