The staff photo album was provided by DC Thomson, a long established Dundee based publishing company in Scotland. The photos are of male and female staff who worked for DC Thomson publishing company and volunteered for service during the Second World War. Most of the staff were employed at the Meadowside headquarters, which is still in operation today.
The photo album contains date of enlistment, names, notable details, and most have an accompanying photograph, many in their uniform. Some of these people were captured, went missing or were killed.
DC Thomson is best known for publishing The Evening Telegraph, The Dundee Courier, The Beano and The Dandy. The Beano is the longest running British children’s comic magazine. DC Thomson is also the parent company of Findmypast.
Among the hundreds of photos in the album, you will find the image the Beano and Dandy illustrator, Dudley Watkins. Watkins was known for creating the Desperate Dan and Oor Wullie characters. Desparate Dan made his first appearance in The Dandy in 1937, five years before Watkins volunteer for service.
