The Birmingham Daily Gazette was funded as a weekly publication in 1741 by Thomas Aris, making it a very early Birmingham newspaper. Daily publication of the Gazette began in 1862 after the paper duty was abolished, which enabled the newspaper to drop its price per issue to one penny. The Birmingham Daily Gazette received criticism from its competitors as it published many advertisements, but was later described by English historian Asa Briggs as ‘one of the most lucrative and important provincial papers, ranking with the Liverpool Mercury and the Edinburgh Courant’.
English author John Thackray Bunce was the editor of the newspaper between 1860 and 1862, and his insights into the history of Birmingham would sometimes be featured in the newspaper long after his editorial role ended. He was also credited in a special Pageant of Birmingham supplement in 1938, which recognised his contributions to the newspaper.
Birmingham Daily Gazette merged with the Birmingham Post in November 1956.
