This conservative supporting newspaper began publication in Leeds in 1754 as the Leedes Intelligencer, a weekly paper started by Griffith Wright. It is considered to be one of Britain’s first regional papers, and is one of Johnston Press’ most popular newspapers.

Despite the name, the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer featured news from wider Britain and all over the world, but with a focus on Yorkshire. It had a companion paper, the Yorkshire Evening Post.

In 1866 the paper changed to a daily publication under the title of Yorkshire Post after it was acquired by the Yorkshire Conservative Newspaper Company Limited in the previous year in response to worries that the liberal Leeds Mercury was becoming too powerful. In 1939, amid concerns regarding the post-war fate of newspapers in general, the Leeds Mercury was also incorporated in to this title following acquisition by the Yorkshire Conservative Newspaper Company Limited in 1923.

The paper, currently titled The Yorkshire Post, continues to be published as a daily broadsheet.

For this newspaper, we have the following titles in, or planned for, our digital archive:

  • 1866–83 The Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer.
  • 1883–2004 The Yorkshire post
