A nugget of Nottinghamshire history and culture

Dating back to the 11th century, Nottinghamshire was mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. The county’s boundaries have barely changed since then. The City of Nottingham is its most populated settlement.

The earliest industries in Nottinghamshire included malting and wool, hosiery and lace. Later, the economy was developed around textiles and coal.

Nottingham is home to Notts County, the oldest professional football club in the world. The city also has a contender for the oldest pub in England. Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem was established in 1189, though two other local pubs claim the title too. Sherwood Forest and its strong links to the legend of Robin Hood have helped the tourism industry boom.

What role did your ancestor play in Nottinghamshire’s history?

According to local folklore, Robin Hood and his merry men slept under Nottinghamshire’s Major Oak, a landmark tree near the village of Edwinstowe.
