The earliest industries in Nottinghamshire included malting and wool, hosiery and lace. Later, the economy was developed around textiles and coal.

Nottingham is home to Notts County, the oldest professional football club in the world. The city also has a contender for the oldest pub in England. Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem was established in 1189, though two other local pubs claim the title too.
