Calderdale Family History Society

We are pleased to be working in partnership with the Calderdale Family History Society which was founded in 1985 with the purpose of encouraging and supporting research into the history of families in the Calderdale area.

The Calderdale Family History Society incorporates Halifax and District and was founded on 7th March 1985. Since that time our membership has grown to in excess of 400 members from members in the UK, Europe, South Africa, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States of America.

Our areas of interest encompass the towns, main villages and parishes of Calderdale in the old West Riding of Yorkshire. For more information visit our website.

The Calderdale Family History Society is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies.

Calderdale Workhouse Registers

Thanks to our partnership with Calderdale Family History Society, you can now search through over 65,000 workhouse registers for the area between 1756 and 1924.

Delve into these records and find out if your ancestor spent time in either the Halifax Ovenden Workhouse, Halifax Gibbet Street Workhouse or Todmorden Gauxholme Workhouse.

National School Admission Registers & Log-Books, 1870-1914

Calderdale Family History Society have also contributed to our collection of National School Admission Registers & Logbooks where you can search for your ancestors in Calderdale and surrounding areas.

Explore this collection of school records which can help you discover your ancestor's birth date, admission year and the school they attended. You may also be able to discover their parents’ names, father’s occupation, exam results and any illnesses that led to absence from school.

Parish records

The Calderdale Family History Society has also made contributions to our extensive collection of parish records for Yorkshire, including records of burials, baptisms, marriages, banns and monumental inscriptions.

Additional information from the society

We meet on the 4th Thursday of each month. We have guest speakers at each meeting discussing various topics which we feel will be of interest to our members. A copy of these topics is included in our quarterly publication of 'The Scrivener'.

  • We have an ongoing publications programme producing Downloadable files.
  • We operate a Members' Interests System from our website in which members can publish their interests by surname, showing both research done, and information required, by date.
  • We operate a free Search Facility for members to allow them access to our 2.5 million records.
  • We have a particular interest in providing help to our oversea members.
