Southwark Archives

We are pleased to be working in partnership with Southwark Archives.

Southwark Archives collects and organises historical records and reference material for the London Borough of Southwark, which was historically part of the county of Surrey. Southwark has a rich heritage and is considered to be one of London's oldest districts.

Southwark Archives holds a wealth of historical documents including historic photographs and drawings, press cuttings, parish registers and poor law records. The archive also holds records of local people, families and properties and has a local history reference library where you can explore books, research notes and newspaper archives.

Non-conformist records

Delve into our collection of non-conformist records for the London Borough of Southwark. These record sets relate to registers created by the Non-Conformist, or Dissenting, denominations of Southwark. These mainly cover the 19th and early 20th centuries and are drawn from Baptist, Congregational (Independent) and Methodist chapels across different parts of the borough.

You can also explore the Southwark Congregational Registers which cover records such as registers of congregation members and sunday school registers.

Southwark Poor Law Records

The collection includes examination books, removal orders, poor relief payments, and more. These records provide unique insights into your ancestors' lives, including their struggles, origins, and family connections. As we digitise more historical records, this collection will continue to grow. 

In this latest update, we have added lists of paupers, casual outdoor relief registers, pensioners’ books, and annual register of the parish poor children. 

Southwark Rate Books

The historic rate books of Southwark, London’s oldest borough, cover 1880 to 1935 and are a rich resource for family and house history. These records reveal whether your ancestor rented or owned property and list the names of occupiers and owners. Spanning gaps between census years, they offer insights into Southwark's diverse and evolving community. British Army, Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment)

Expanding on our current offering of records for the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment, we have published the enrolment forms from 1892 to 1919 for the 1st Cadet Battalion in partnership with Southwark Archives. The forms can help you discover new details about your ancestor, with information such as a physical description, address, previous occupation, and signature provided on each enrolment form.
