It was recorded in the Domesday Book as Alrewic, from the Old English Alor (alder) Wic (dwelling or farmstead). It possibly could be descended from the Saxon Aethelric (Noble Ruler), or as a patronymic derived from an ancestor's name (the son of Alderich).
