Cleveland, North Yorks & South Durham Family History Society

Formed in 1979, the Cleveland, North Yorkshire & South Durham Family History Society (to give it its full name) has grown to a membership of some 2,500. The Society’s area of interest covers the old county of Cleveland (Teesside), on the north east coast; the southern part of County Durham from Hart near Hartlepool to Middleton in Teesdale; and, in northern Yorkshire, most of the old North Riding from Whitby to Hawes in Upper Wensleydale.

The aims of the Society are to promote the study of genealogy and family history, to educate the public therein by holding meetings, sharing information, encouraging research, giving assistance, and producing publications for the public benefit, with emphasis on, and specialist knowledge of, the northern region.

Monthly meetings take place in Hartlepool, Sedgefield, Northallerton and the Upper Dales, with full day events held every six months that have become firm favourites with both local and distant members.

Every quarter the “Cleveland FHS Journal” is produced, giving general family history news, information about our area, contributions from members’ personal research and regular listings of members’ family history interests. Many of these items, and further information about the activities of the Society, its officers and research facilities, will be found on our website. Here will also be found a full collection of publications either as booklets, microfiche or CDs which cover items such as local parish register transcripts, census indexes, monumental inscriptions, ironstone mining, and also an application form for membership to this very friendly Society.

The Cleveland Family History Society is also proud to be a long-standing member of the Federation of Family History Societies and the Yorkshire Regional Group of Family History Societies.
