Welcome. SFHG was one of the first groups of its type, designed to serve all those living in or with ancestry from Sussex who have an interest in genealogy. It started with a meeting centre in Brighton & Hove in 1973 and is a founder member of the Federation of Family History Societies. It has subsequently expanded to include representation in Chichester, Crawley, Uckfield, West Meads and Worthing where meetings are held monthly. There are also reciprocal arrangements with other Societies in Eastbourne, Hastings, Rudgwick and Tunbridge Wells.
The Group offers advice, help and encouragement to members and non members alike but some information is only available to our worldwide membership of about 4000. They are kept informed and can share information through our award winning quarterly magazine and our website. These are supported by our e-newsletter SussexLink and an e-mailing list. As well as being the main source of information about the Group and its activities, the website provides access to members' interests. There is an annual conference open to all.
The Group operates a Library which at present is restricted in its scope but which will be much improved when it moves into the new Record Office for East Sussex planned for a site in Falmer.
One specific objective of the Group is the preparation of complete transcriptions and indexes of marriages, baptisms, burials and memorial inscriptions and censuses for both East and West Sussex, and subsequently making these publicly available. At present, the Marriage Index is complete, and can be purchased on a CD. The other projects are ongoing, and the results are being made available to members via the above website.
The Group also has a very successful publications operation, the results of which together with other publications of interest are available at many family history shows throughout the South-East as well as online.
If you would like to join this forward looking, friendly group, please contact us via our website.
