How England’s East Midlands made history

The East Midlands region of England includes the historic counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.

If you have family ties to this region of England, your ancestors may have mined for coal, spun cotton, or worked in a hosiery or knitwear factory.

The world's oldest working factory is located at the region’s only world heritage site, Derwent Valley Mills in Derbyshire.

The accomplished scientist, Isaac Newton was born in the region and in 1899 silicone was discovered at University College, Nottingham.

The writer D.H. Lawrence, Melton Mowbray pies and Dr Martens footwear were all born in the East Midlands.

Once home to an original copy of the Magna Carta, Lincoln Cathedral dominates the city's skyline.
