A short snippet of South West England history

The South West has the longest coastline of all of England’s regions. It includes Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

The region is largely rural with two national parks and four World Heritage Sites. Areas of Gloucestershire flourished through the wool and silk industries, whereas Bristol’s economy was based on maritime trade. In Cornwall, wealth and employment came from tin and copper mining.

William Herschel discovered Uranus while observing the skies from his garden in Bath. The South West was also home to Jan Ingenhousz who discovered photosynthesis at Bowood House in Wiltshire, and Edward Jenner, the pioneer of vaccinations.

The UK’s first carpets were made in Wiltshire, plasticine was invented in Bath and the world’s first solid chocolate bar was made in Bristol.

One of the UK's most iconic landmarks, Stonehenge in Wiltshire dates back to prehistoric times.
