A swift look at South East England's history

The South East is England’s third largest region and has the highest population. Its counties are Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Sussex.

In the north, Oxford grew from being a place of strategic importance in the Saxon period, to being the location of the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Further south is the Isle of Wight, England’s largest island, which has played a key role in the defence of the mainland ports of Portsmouth and Southampton.

An area with rich aviation history, much of the Battle of Britain was fought in the skies above South East England during the Second World War.

Winnie the Pooh, Mars Bars, passenger trains and the rock band Genesis all began in South East England.

On a clear day, the magnificent White Cliffs of Dover in Kent are visible from France.
